On the night before Jesus’ crucifixion, He made one of the most astounding statements of His whole ministry. John 16:7 records these words:
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.”
Jesus in these few words wanted us to know that the Holy Spirit is no less important to Him but even more beneficial for us that He goes away so we could receive the Holy Spirit. Jesus knew His disciples would be shocked by His statement, so He prefaced it with the words, “I tell you the truth.”
Who is the Holy Spirit? Let’s first look at who He’s not: the Holy Spirit is not a wind, water, fire, dove etc. Take a look at the above scripture again. Jesus said……..I will send Him, not it unto you. The Holy Spirit is not a thing. Acts 2:1-4; Matt 3:16.
Who is the Holy Spirit? He is God! What does it mean to say He is the third Person in the God-head? Expound. Gen 1:1-3, 1Jn 5:7, Jn 14
John 14:16-17 “and I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever……..”
Contrast with Heb 7:11, 13, 14. Note the word another.
The Holy Spirit has being in existence from eternity. The Bible describes Him as eternal in other words He preexisted creation and has always existed and will always do. Heb 9:14.The first time He was mentioned was in Genesis but that was not His beginning. He has no beginning. Genesis 1:1-2 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” He has always been present and was functional during the time of creation and was present during Jesus’ ministry. Acts 10:38
Divine attributes of the Holy Spirit
• Eternal Heb 9:14
• Omnipresence Psalm 139:7-10
• Omniscience 1 Cor 2:10-11; Jn 14:26
• Omnipotent Acts 10:38; 1:8.
An introduction to His Ministry
Before we consider the ministry of the Holy Spirit, let’s take a look at the old and the new covenant. The people of old could not receive the fullness of the Spirit but we have the fullness of the Holy Spirit with us. Mark 2:22; Matt 9:17; John 3:34. God does not give the Holy Spirit by measure but in His fullness.
Another truth we must grasp is that the Holy Spirit is a gift. Acts 2:38. Well if that’s the case, then one may ask has He been given? That’s a very legitimate question to ask. Check out these scriptures. John 7: 37; Acts 1:4-8; Acts 2: 1-4; Acts 19:2; Titus 3:5
If Jesus couldn’t, or wouldn’t, operate independently of the Holy Spirit, neither should we nor can we. Acts 10:38; Acts 1:1-4; Heb 9:14
Father I thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Today I embrace His ministry in my life. It is to my advantage that He came. For this cause things cannot go worse with me anymore. It can only be to my advantage. I thank you that I do not lack help for Your Word declares that He is my Helper. Now I see why I can’t feel dejected or cast down because He is my Comforter. Thank You Father. In Jesus’ wonderful, miraculous name! Amen!
