Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning.8 Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. [1 John 2:7-11]
The commandment to love, as given by Jesus Christ in John 13:34, sums up the entire old commandments and leads the new creation to a higher plane of God’s desire for man. For the carnal law said to love one another as yourself but the word of righteousness declares that we love one another as He loved us! Selah.
Jesus has become our very standard and perfection. We do not look at ourselves any more to tell how we ought to walk in love, now we look upon the face of Jesus Christ! We see now, in his sufferings and death, the perfect example of selfless love…and we purpose in our hearts to love as He did us strengthened by the power of the Helper at work in us!
Now we recognize the truly infinite dimensions of the call to love to which we have entered in Christ. Now we understand that nothing shall be too grave to forgive, too hard to embrace in love…too difficult to bear in the grace of His love! God is our Helper! We have for ourselves an example of how to love in Jesus Christ; it is truly infinite in expression and limitless in capacity!
It is in the glory of this true light now shining that we should bask. The darkness of ignorance has receded with the tides of deception. Now we can see clearly in the light of truth even as He sees! Now we know the nature we carry on our inside. Now we know the lofty heights to which He has called us into…
Let us love, as He has commanded us to!
