1 Peter · Exegesis of Light

The hidden man of the heart

1 Peter 3:3-6 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

The hidden man of the heart.

Man is Spirit. He has a soul; he lives in a body. But man is Spirit. We must realize this and highlight our attention on this “hidden man”. Many times, we seem to put effort into keeping our bodies “fine and well-polished”.

We make sure we eat…it has become second nature for all of us; some of us do regular physical activity; almost all of us make certain we are “well dressed” all the time.

Do we pay as much attention to the grooming of this hidden man as we do the outward man?

Who is this hidden man?

I believe this refers to our spirit and soul. I believe the distinction between a man’s spirit and his soul is something only the Word of God can delineate. For the soul of a man is to his spirit what the physical senses are to the body. Therefore the distinction may be quite imperceptible.

However, the Word of God is quick and powerful piercing into the dividing asunder of soul and spirit. I believe the spirit is the core substance of man’s being. For the New Creation, his Spirit is made of the life and nature of God. For the old man, his spirit is sin. For the new man, his spirit is righteousness and love.

The soul is the “mind, emotion and will…” of a man. So see; every defining character of a man with respect to tangible expression, is an expression of his soul. Therefore, when a man speaks, his words communicate the ideas of his thoughts – which thoughts are of his mind. We can tell a man has a soul because he has a mind which expresses itself with words.

Let us pay as much attention to the grooming of this hidden man as we do the outward man….

Selah.
