Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
Forgiveness is perhaps the deepest indicator of true spiritual maturity and perfection in Christ. How deep is a man founded in the Love of Christ? Watch how he forgives especially those who deeply offend him. Observe how he loves in the long suffering of forgiveness. Selah
The instruction here is to forgive as Christ also forgave us. This is wonderful! He has not said we should forgive when we feel like it….or when the offender is truly repentant…..or when we are only mildly hurt. No! He says forgive in the same way and to the same measure Christ forgives us!
How does, or has, Christ forgiven us?
Our earlier studies into the first chapter of the book of Colossians cast huge beams of light into this question. This is the crux: God in Christ has forgiven all our sins by the power of the blood of Jesus. Today, God does not withhold forgiveness from you…you are forgiven even if you do not ask for it! This is how Christ forgives us. This is how we ought to forgive men also. Selah
Therefore the next time you are struggling with hate in your heart and seething with thoughts of vengeance….remember O child of God this truth! Remember this Word of the Lord. Forgive! The person who offended you may not have repented and asked for forgiveness from you….But forgive anyway! This is in the power of Christ in you! For it is the power of Love to be bruised and hurt and still continue pouring out love relentlessly. Selah. Forgiveness is an expression of Love. It is the fruit of the born again spirit. 1Corinthians 13; Galatians 5.
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32
Let us learn to truly forgive.
