Colossians · Exegesis of Light

how do we paralyse the vestiges of the old man in us?

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
[Colossians 3:5]

This compels us to feast soberly on the empty cross of Jesus. For we are them that came through the cross of Jesus and have been admonished to carry its power with us in this our sojourn. By the cross, the new creation has been crucified to the world….its lusts and desires. He is dead to its systems of selfishness and unbridled lusts. This is the testimony of scripture. Gal 6:14.

Therefore the new creation man is enjoined to “carry his cross”. He has been commanded to keep the vestiges of the defunct sinful nature – the partly renewed mind with its wrongly aligned will and desires; and the physical body with its numerous infirmities – crucified daily. This means he must subject it always to death…it is a constant reenactment of the reality that was achieved by Jesus on the cross. How is this “mortification” to be done? By the use of the sword of the spirit!

For the Word of God is that sword of the spirit that is sharper than any two edged sword…dividing asunder even unto the separation of spirit and soul…a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. This is the sword which we use to paralyse the vestiges of the old man in us and keep him subdued. This is the instrument we harness to make alive in us the power of the cross of Jesus. Selah.

Are you daily courting the expressions of darkness? Be free! Come alive to the power of the Word and learn the skill of using the sword of the spirit to extricate the debris of the old nature from your expressions. Learn to “mortify your members”.
