Colossians 2:1-2 For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;
I believe the light shed in this portion of Scripture is loaded with truths – relevant, practical and within the framework of our minds to grasp. It is the desire of the Holy Spirit for us to awaken to the full load of Truth unveiled. It is perhaps His greatest office to minister to us the sublime mysteries of Christ. I call it the tutelage of the Holy Ghost. Glory to God!
Here we see His deep yearnings for us to awaken to the fullness of the revelation of Christ. Here we see Him calming our tempest tossed minds- as it is now- seeing we have not fully apprehended the Light, and that the conceptual framework of our minds has not fully understood.
I love that phrase “…comforted….unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding….unto the acknowledgement of the mystery….”!
He says assurance! He gives us certainty that we will come to the full glare of the Light. How many of us think that the mysteries of God in Christ is beyond our grasp? How many of us settle for a mere cup to soothe our thirst when He calls us to be fully immersed into the soundless depths of living waters.
I believe that the new creation has been designed to carry the full load of Divinity. In our spirit we carry Divinity (the Holy Spirit); in our minds, we ought to carry Divinity also! There is no limitation placed by the Father on how much of the mysteries of Light the child of God can awaken to. The truth is He has designed us to be able to embrace the fullness of the Divine Mind.
This is the task and objective of the Teacher today; to lift us up into the divine mind…that we should think like, talk like and function like the First Born. That is the only mental construction that destroys selfishness, uncertainty, fear and all the host of those beggarly elements we seem to be stymied by.
Then He says understanding! I am always excited when I see this. Look at the posture of much of Christendom and indeed of the entire world that says that “there is no need for understanding in Christ…all you need is faith”; But does not faith embrace understanding? Therein lies the dichotomy that is plaguing many and unsettling many from living up to the fullness of their calling in Christ.
For multitudes, there seems to be an irreconcilable chasm between Reason (which is the enclave within which understanding is found) and Faith. The outward expression of this dichotomy is found in the Child of God who “shows a form of godliness outwardly but is constantly denying the power thereof”. He says God is, yet he is moved more by the words of men; He says Christ is Lord, yet he gives mammon the final say in his life; He calls God Father, and immediately turns to the orphans bread of uncertainty and worry for solace. There is an observable obtrusive dichotomy which ought not to be so!
I submit that the new creation posture that jettisons reason in his engagement with the divine Oracles is the root cause of this dichotomy. Selah. Remember Jesus’s teachings on the parable of the sower and see how much our Lord highlights understanding. The amalgamated frontier remains: Reason Enlightened by Heavens Light.
